Why do earphones have a left and a right ear plug?

Why does it matter which ear the plug is in? Especially if I’m listening to a relaxation CD? I don’t need stereo and I suspect that’s related to the L and R ear plugs.

You are absolutely correct unless the earphone was made with a “front” and “back” side to them. I have some in-ear earphones that are shaped to go into one ear only. Putting a left earphone in your right ear either feels awkward or the earphone does not stay in the ear.

Some headsets with a single cord have the cord exit toward the back of the earphone. It might be a little awkward to have it come out the front and obviously an “around the back” headset would look strange if it were mounted around your face or upside down

With most music, it doesn’t matter, in classical music, the violins are on the left and the woodwinds are on the right. With a good recording, you can hear the separation and some people wouldn’t like it if it were crossed over.

In your case it doesn’t matter so don’t worry about it, just relax and enjoy your CD.
